But the complex is exactly inferior - we tend to overrate our "national" "achievements" just because we kind of don't feel safe (or think that we are not safe) in our perception of the world. Bulgarians are always "robbed", lied, deceived by the great powers and so on. I explain this with the past. Sure, there are grains truth in such feelings. For all Balkanian countries. I mean that because we don't feel appraised by the others we tend to appraise ourselves. And this is inferiority complex. The example with the Chinese is correct, of course. Maybe you are right that everyone will feel secured when surrounded by his people. But you can't compare the behavor of Bulgarian, Serbs, Moldovians, Macedonians, Hungarians on one hand and Germans, Swiss, Swedish, Dutch on the other. It's just different. You have interesting posts now that you are experiencing student life in the US :). Just with this post, may I slightly disagree? That's how it seemed to me in the beginning too, but now I realized that 1. this is actually common to other cultures as well (Indians for example, although you state the opposite - check again with Indian colleagues) and 2. if we Bulgarians have any complex at all it is not inferiority but rather a superiority one :). Or in other words, as a nation we all tend to be "a little" grandomaniac (as in we make the best cheese, we have the greatest history, we are the smartest and most beautiful nation on the planet, we sent a song in outer space like a 1000 years ago, etc.). That's one reason why Bulgarians abroad stick together also - we can then discuss about how "stupid" everyone else is and how they don't really have anything like our education, culture or history or whatever...we sometimes think we are so special and unique that we can talk about certain parts of our lives and experiences only with other Bulgarians as there is no way other people can relate to them :). At least those are some of my observations - of course there are exceptions. I hope this has changed and Bulgarians that are abroad now are beginning to see themselves more as people/students/workers like everyone else and not segregate out as a "special" group :). Hehe and even this post, come on, do you seriously believe hanging out together is unique to Bulgarians? Why don't you enquire about other immigrant communities in the US? greek ones, jewish ones, hmmm...if Chinese don't stick to each other abroad how do you explain Chinatown? Seriously, there is nothing special about this behavior, we are doing it exactly like everyone else, sorry to diasppoint you :). hehe, so nice to find your blog again after a long time :) .
